High quality mineral compounds for technical challenges
Mineral compounds for technical applications are mainly used in powder form, as fillers or additives with a specific function. We will be happy to send you detailed specifications, safety data sheets and product samples on request. The following examples give you an insight into your options in the technical area:
POLYMER
Mineral compounds are required as additives in a large number of different plastics. Among others, various oxides are used as fillers, acid acceptors or viscosity regulators in distinct plastic formulations. Furthermore, hydroxides are popular absorbers and are used to optimize polymer compounds. Magnesium hydroxide in particular is an acid- and halogen-free flame retardant that offers exciting advantages compared to aluminum trihydroxide. Other calcium and magnesium compounds such as carbonates, chlorides and stearates are both important additives and necessary fillers.
RUBBER AND CAOUTCHOUC
Mineral compounds are particularly popular in the rubber and caoutchouc industry. In addition to the usual natural fillers, very special high-quality synthetic products are also in demand. Oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and stearates, which are used for vulcanization, acid regulation and as flame retardants, are very common. Choose your favorite from a wide range of different qualities that meet the requirements of individual formulations.
PAINT INDUSTRY / PRINT INDUSTRY
Mineral compounds are particularly popular in the rubber and caoutchouc industry. In addition to the usual natural fillers, very special high-quality synthetic products are also in demand. Oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and stearates, which are used for vulcanization, acid regulation and as flame retardants, are very common. Choose your favorite from a wide range of different qualities that meet the requirements of individual formulations.
PAINT INDUSTRY / PRINT INDUSTRY
Magnesium compounds play a crucial role in the painting and printing industry. In addition to calcium and magnesium carbonate, which are used as fillers, a very fine magnesium oxide is required for printing inks based on toluene. Metal soaps such as zinc stearate and calcium stearate are popular additives for paint and varnish production. A broad product portfolio of different qualities is available.
DENTAL APPLICATIONS
Magnesium compounds are preferred raw materials in the dental industry, especially in traditional investment materials and alginate mixtures. Our customers receive a consistently high quality of highly pure fused magnesia for demanding use in investment materials. Due to our many years of experience with electrofused magnesium oxides, we are aware of the importance of constant reactivity, and we enable individual product specifications for each customer. Synthetic magnesium oxides and magnesium hydroxides are also used for the production of alginate-based impression materials.
GLASS INDUSTRY
Pure magnesium oxide with a low iron content is an important raw material in the manufacture of special glass, enamel frits and solar panels. Depending on the area of application, glass consists of mixtures of basic oxides (e. g. sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, barium or zinc oxide) and acidic oxides (e. g. silicon dioxide, boron trioxide, aluminum trioxide or diphosphorus pentoxide). Our selection of special oxides and carbonates for this sensitive area of application have been established on the market for many years.
CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
Whether magnesium, calcium, zinc or aluminum: We offer various minerals in different quality classes for the chemical industry. Among others, magnesium oxides, hydroxides and carbonates are used as starting materials in the production of other magnesium compounds, e. g. in metal soaps. Most mineral compounds play an important role in the manufacture of intermediates and auxiliary materials.
FIBER-PLASTIC COMPOSITE MATERIAL
Magnesium oxides and magnesium hydroxides are included in most SMC-formulations to optimize homogeneity and viscosity during production. In the compounding process, calcium and zinc stearates are added as release agents. The selection of products offers the right properties for the requirements of this industry.
FERTILIZER
Magnesium oxide serves as a source of magnesium in feed additives and calf milk. Magnesium compounds are also used as additives in fertilizers.
MANUFACTURE OF PVC
Minerals are essential for the production of PVC. Magnesium oxides and hydroxides in particular are important components of PVC stabilizers. Very fine, high-purity grindings with low iron values are the main characteristics for the formulation of cables, pipes, foils and profiles. Both natural and synthetic qualities are used. In addition, calcium compounds are traditionally used as fillers.
BUILDING MATERIALS
One advantage in the building materials sector is the use of mineral raw materials. Due to the versatile product properties, a widespread use is possible. Historically, the use of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride in a ratio of 3:1 is known for the production of sorel cement. In other cement formulas, magnesium oxides or magnesium hydroxides optimize the reaction time and hardening. Due to the non-toxic and neutral properties of magnesium and calcium, industry appreciates using these mineral compounds to produce other building materials, such as isolating and insulating materials. Use the large selection for a wide range of options in the building materials industry. Further information on the industrial minerals industry, including technical applications and sustainability, can also be found at IMA-Europe.
TECHNICAL CERAMICS
Technical ceramics primarily comprises ceramic materials and products for technical applications, such as: silicate ceramics, oxide ceramics and non-oxide ceramics. The use of magnesium-based fillers is an important part of the formulation and offers various physical and mechanical advantages. For different areas of application in high-performance ceramics, electrofused, dead-burned and synthetic magnesium oxides with high-purity and in constant quality are used.
WELDING POWDER
Magnesium oxides are used as additive in welding powder formulations.
ADHESIVES
Adhesives are present in both organic and inorganic compounds. Wet adhesives, dispersion adhesives, hot melt adhesives, contact adhesives and reactive adhesives often contain metal oxides, silicates and phosphates as binders and stabilizers. Magnesium and calcium compounds are ideal for implementing special requirements due to their neutral properties. Certain additives, e. g. magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide, with different activities and subtleties achieve a positive effect to improve adhesive properties. Carbonates and talc as fillers offer additional advantages. Our large selection of MAGNESIA products allows a wide range of options for the adhesives industry.
WATER TREATMENT
Water treatment is the targeted change in water quality. There are two implementation options: On one hand, the removal of substances from the water for cleaning, de-ironing and desalination. On the other hand, the addition of minerals for dosage and acidity regulation (pH value). Flocculants contain for example metal salts and lime products, such as magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, calcium oxide and aluminium sulfate. MAGNESIA offers a wide range of different qualities for water treatment.
PAPER AND PULP
Magnesium oxide and magnesium hydroxide are part of the sulphite pulping process. In bleaching they are used as a source of magnesium and stabilizer. As a functional filler, calcium compounds such as oxides, hydroxides or carbonates improve the quality of high-standard paper.
