POLYMER

Min­er­al com­pounds are required as addi­tives in a large num­ber of dif­fer­ent plas­tics. Among oth­ers, var­i­ous oxides are used as fillers, acid accep­tors or vis­cos­i­ty reg­u­la­tors in dis­tinct plas­tic for­mu­la­tions. Fur­ther­more, hydrox­ides are pop­u­lar absorbers and are used to opti­mize poly­mer com­pounds. Mag­ne­sium hydrox­ide in par­tic­u­lar is an acid- and halo­gen-free flame retar­dant that offers excit­ing advan­tages com­pared to alu­minum tri­hy­drox­ide. PAINT INDUSTRY / PRINT INDUSTRY

Mag­ne­sium com­pounds play a cru­cial role in the paint­ing and print­ing indus­try. In addi­tion to cal­ci­um and mag­ne­sium car­bon­ate, which are used as fillers, a very fine mag­ne­sium oxide is required for print­ing inks based on toluene. Met­al soaps such as zinc stearate and cal­ci­um stearate are pop­u­lar addi­tives for paint and var­nish pro­duc­tion. A broad prod­uct port­fo­lio of dif­fer­ent qual­i­ties is available.

DENTAL APPLICATIONS

Mag­ne­sium com­pounds are pre­ferred raw mate­ri­als in the den­tal indus­try, espe­cial­ly in tra­di­tion­al invest­ment mate­ri­als and algi­nate mix­tures. GLASS INDUSTRY

Pure mag­ne­sium oxide with a low iron con­tent is an impor­tant raw mate­r­i­al in the man­u­fac­ture of spe­cial glass, enam­el frits and solar pan­els. Depend­ing on the area of appli­ca­tion, glass con­sists of mix­tures of basic oxides (e. g. sodi­um, potas­si­um, mag­ne­sium, cal­ci­um, bar­i­um or zinc oxide) and acidic oxides (e. g. sil­i­con diox­ide, boron tri­ox­ide, alu­minum tri­ox­ide or diphos­pho­rus pen­tox­ide). Our selec­tion of spe­cial oxides and car­bon­ates for this sen­si­tive area of appli­ca­tion have been estab­lished on the mar­ket for many years.

CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

Whether mag­ne­sium, cal­ci­um, zinc or alu­minum: We offer var­i­ous min­er­als in dif­fer­ent qual­i­ty class­es for the chem­i­cal indus­try. Among oth­ers, mag­ne­sium oxides, hydrox­ides and car­bon­ates are used as start­ing mate­ri­als in the pro­duc­tion of oth­er mag­ne­sium com­pounds, e. g. in met­al soaps. Most min­er­al com­pounds play an impor­tant role in the man­u­fac­ture of inter­me­di­ates and aux­il­iary materials.

FIBER-PLASTIC COMPOSITE MATERIAL

Mag­ne­sium oxides and mag­ne­sium hydrox­ides are includ­ed in most SMC-for­mu­la­tions to opti­mize homo­gene­ity and vis­cos­i­ty dur­ing pro­duc­tion. In the com­pound­ing process, cal­ci­um and zinc stearates are added as release agents. The selec­tion of prod­ucts offers the right prop­er­ties for the require­ments of this industry.

FERTILIZER

Mag­ne­sium oxide serves as a source of mag­ne­sium in feed addi­tives and calf milk. Mag­ne­sium com­pounds are also used as addi­tives in fertilizers.

MANUFACTURE OF PVC

Min­er­als are essen­tial for the pro­duc­tion of PVC. Mag­ne­sium oxides and hydrox­ides in par­tic­u­lar are impor­tant com­po­nents of PVC sta­bi­liz­ers. Very fine, high-puri­ty grind­ings with low iron val­ues are the main char­ac­ter­is­tics for the for­mu­la­tion of cables, pipes, foils and pro­files. Both nat­ur­al and syn­thet­ic qual­i­ties are used. In addi­tion, cal­ci­um com­pounds are tra­di­tion­al­ly used as fillers.

BUILDING MATERIALS

One advan­tage in the build­ing mate­ri­als sec­tor is the use of min­er­al raw mate­ri­als. Due to the ver­sa­tile prod­uct prop­er­ties, a wide­spread use is pos­si­ble. His­tor­i­cal­ly, the use of mag­ne­sium oxide and mag­ne­sium chlo­ride in a ratio of 3:1 is known for the pro­duc­tion of sorel cement. In oth­er cement for­mu­las, mag­ne­sium oxides or mag­ne­sium hydrox­ides opti­mize the reac­tion time and hard­en­ing. Due to the non-tox­ic and neu­tral prop­er­ties of mag­ne­sium and cal­ci­um, indus­try appre­ci­ates using these min­er­al com­pounds to pro­duce oth­er build­ing mate­ri­als, such as iso­lat­ing and insu­lat­ing mate­ri­als. TECHNICAL CERAMICS

Tech­ni­cal ceram­ics pri­mar­i­ly com­pris­es ceram­ic mate­ri­als and prod­ucts for tech­ni­cal appli­ca­tions, such as: sil­i­cate ceram­ics, oxide ceram­ics and non-oxide ceram­ics. The use of mag­ne­sium-based fillers is an impor­tant part of the for­mu­la­tion and offers var­i­ous phys­i­cal and mechan­i­cal advan­tages. For dif­fer­ent areas of appli­ca­tion in high-per­for­mance ceram­ics, elec­tro­fused, dead-burned and syn­thet­ic mag­ne­sium oxides with high-puri­ty and in con­stant qual­i­ty are used.

WELDING POWDER

Mag­ne­sium oxides are used as addi­tive in weld­ing pow­der formulations.

ADHESIVES

Adhe­sives are present in both organ­ic and inor­gan­ic com­pounds. Wet adhe­sives, dis­per­sion adhe­sives, hot melt adhe­sives, con­tact adhe­sives and reac­tive adhe­sives often con­tain met­al oxides, sil­i­cates and phos­phates as binders and sta­bi­liz­ers. Mag­ne­sium and cal­ci­um com­pounds are ide­al for imple­ment­ing spe­cial require­ments due to their neu­tral prop­er­ties. Cer­tain addi­tives, e. g. mag­ne­sium oxide or mag­ne­sium hydrox­ide, with dif­fer­ent activ­i­ties and sub­tleties achieve a pos­i­tive effect to improve adhe­sive prop­er­ties. Car­bon­ates and talc as fillers offer addi­tion­al advan­tages. WATER TREATMENT

Water treat­ment is the tar­get­ed change in water qual­i­ty. There are two imple­men­ta­tion options: On one hand, the removal of sub­stances from the water for clean­ing, de-iron­ing and desali­na­tion. On the oth­er hand, the addi­tion of min­er­als for dosage and acid­i­ty reg­u­la­tion (pH val­ue). Floc­cu­lants con­tain for exam­ple met­al salts and lime prod­ucts, such as mag­ne­sium oxide, mag­ne­sium hydrox­ide, mag­ne­sium chlo­ride, cal­ci­um oxide and alu­mini­um sul­fate. PAPER AND PULP

Mag­ne­sium oxide and mag­ne­sium hydrox­ide are part of the sul­phite pulp­ing process. In bleach­ing they are used as a source of mag­ne­sium and sta­bi­liz­er. As a func­tion­al filler, cal­ci­um com­pounds such as oxides, hydrox­ides or car­bon­ates improve the qual­i­ty of high-stan­dard paper.
